His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex attended Westminster Abbey for the opening of the Field of Remembrance 2018
His Royal Highness arrived at the Field of Remembrance and was met by The Dean of Westminster, the President of the Royal British Legion Poppy Factory and members of The Royal British Legion.
Prince Harry laid a Cross of Remembrance in front of two wooden crosses from the Graves of Unknown British Soldiers from the First and Second World Wars. The ‘Last Post’ was sounded by a musician from the Band of the Coldstream Guards followed by a two minutes’ silence after which His Royal Highness met veterans from past and more recent conflicts.
Bringing a smile to many faces ridden with sadness at the memory of the fallen was military mascot “Watchman”, the Staffordshire Bull Terrier from the Staffordshire Regiment resplendent in his regimental coat and poppy.
The first Field of Remembrance was held in the grounds of Westminster Abbey in November 1928. That year only two Remembrance Tribute Crosses were planted. But it began a tradition that took root and has grown and grown over the decades. Each Remembrance Tribute carries a personal message to someone who lost his or her life in the service of our country.

The Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey was officially opened on Thursday 8 November at 11am, 2018.
Each year, hundreds of volunteers help to plant more than 120,000 tributes across six Fields of Remembrance in the UK.
The very first Field of Remembrance was held in the grounds of Westminster Abbey in November 1928, when The Poppy Factory took a group of disabled veterans, a tray of poppies and a collecting tin to the grounds of St Margaret’s Church in Westminster. Only a handful of poppies were planted around a single cross, but it began a tradition that has grown over the decades.

The admin order is available below for the AGM and medical service reunion dinner on the 24th of October, 2026. The PMRAFNS Association will be subsidising the ticket price from £58 to £45 for Association members. Please read the admin order on the events page and follow the instructions for registering your details. The AGM will be held in the afternoon with a sandwich lunch; this will be free of charge.
